DataStreams: | twptsiskycoverC3.a1, twptsiskycoverC3.b1 |
Description: | The value of "sample_int" reported in the netCDF header is incorrect. The correct sampling interval is 30 seconds. The maximum values for the variable "sunny" is incorrect. It should be 1, not 100 as documented in the netCDF header. Users should disregard the "qc_sunny" flag during this period of time and apply their own qc check if desired. The minimum value for the variable "solar.altitude" is incorrect. It should be -90, not 10 as documented in the netCDF header. Users should disregard the "qc_solar.altitude" flag during this period of time and apply their own qc check if desired. |

Subject: | TWP/SMET/C3 - Intermittent Pressure Sensor Failure |
DataStreams: | twpsmet60sC3.a1, twpsmet60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The Barometric Pressure sensor was intermittently failing at TWP site C3 Darwin. At times there were large pressure fluctuations occurring on the order of 24 mb in a few minutes. Times of large pressure fluctuations are readily apparent in the data. At these times the data should be carefully analyzed before determining it's usefulness. In between the periods of large fluctuations the readings appear to be stable. It is still suggested that independent pressure data be obtained for comparison before use. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Incorrect NIP cal coefficient |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | During our site visit comparison at Darwin we observed that the skyrad NIP was reading about 50 w/m2 lower than the comparison cavity radfiometer and the replacement NIP on the comparison stand. We found that the calibration coefficient for the NIP (responsivity at 45o)was put in as 8.64X10-6. The NIP was new and had not been calibrated at SGP. The factory number was 8.04X10-6. We corrected the calibration coefficient and the instruments agreed to better than 5 w/m2. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Reprocess: Incorrect datalogger program affecting PIR1 and PIR2 |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The excitation delays using in measuring the PIR1 case thermistor commonly named "Case1" and the PIR2 dome thermistor called "Dome2" were discovered to have been incorrectly set to 0 in the Skyrad datalogger program when the new CR23X based Skyrad loggers were installed. The result of no delay in these measurements results in an error in the measured resistance of the thermistors, Case1 and Dome2, and thus the calculated PIR1 and PIR2 irradiances. The errors are inversely proportial to temperature. Users can apply temperature dependent irradiance corrections as shown in the table below. Recall that the reported uncertainty of PIRs is typically +-.25% to +-.5% or 1 to 2 W/m2. The error corrections become the same order of magnitude or larger than the instrument uncertainties at or below 260K or 9F. In Feb, the sun moved from south to north and the Scitech tracker does not seem to be able to deal with this. During this period the operators power cycled the tracker between 05:00Z and 10:00Z almost every day and data from around solar noon (03:30Z) until the power cycle are unusable for the measurements that use the tracker (NIP, B&W Diffuse, and shaded PIRs). Description: | The ORG data is collected via analog signal and not digital. Therefore, we continuously collect data even when no rain is occurring. We also capture small events such as leaves, large bugs, dust, etc blowing through the measurement path. Because this discrete event occurs quickly the value is usually captured for 1 or 2 seconds. This value is then averaged to the minute producing rainrate on the order of .009 mm/hr or less. These values are not indicative of rain and should be removed from the record or summing over long periods can bias the climate record. We will reprocess the data to remove these small values. |

Subject: | TWP/SMET/C3 - Wind Speed data contain offset due to induced voltage |
DataStreams: | twpsmet60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The marine model of the RM Young wind sensor needs twisted pair shielded cable. The manufacturer did not originally supply the pigtail with twisted pair shielded cable. Use of twisted pair shielded cable for the rest of the cable run to the logger was also not specified. This caused an induced voltage in the wind speed line from the wind direction excitation. The induced voltage varied from sensor to sensor and probably changed anytime the cable was replaced or parts of the wind sensor were repaired or replaced. The induced voltage has been seen to vary from 0.15 m/s to as much as 1.08 m/s. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Direct normal instrument failure |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC3.a0, twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The NIP instrument (short_direct_normal data stream) failed giving bad data during this time period. The failure start time coincides with a reported DC power failure but no connection between the reported power failure and the failure of this instrument could be determined. Ops also reported the tracker clock running 2.9 minutes slow during maintenance on 12/22 0300GMT (see CS-2008-0714). Again, the slow clock is not suspect and did not appear to affect alignment. Ops replaced the NIP instrument on 12/30 and short_direct_normal data resumed normal operation. Disregard the short_direct_normal (NIP) data during this time period or calculate using the global and diffuse instruments and the following relationship: short_direct_normal = ((down_short_hemisp - down_short_diffuse_hemisp))/cos(zenith angle) |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Tracker inoperative |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC3.a0, twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The tracker at Darwin failed 01/23. The tracker was power cycled on 01/27 and it returned to normal operation. The affected data streams are short_direct_normal (NIP) and down_short_diffuse_hemisp (8-48). The down_short_hemisp are not affected. The down_long_hemisp1 and 2 (PIR1 and PIR2) should not be affected but direct sun can affect individual instrument performance. |

Subject: | TWP/SMET/C3 - Reprocess: Station Pressure values reported in hPa instead of kPa. |
DataStreams: | twpsmet60sC3.b1 |
Description: | An incorrect program was entered into the datalogger. This program did not convert the station pressure from hPa to kPa. This made the values larger by a factor of 10 and caused the QC bit to be tripped. |

Subject: | TWP/SMET/C3 - Reprocess: Temperature Biased low by 1.06 Degrees |
DataStreams: | twpsmet60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The temperature of the SMET system was biased low by 1.06 Deg C due to a non-precision resistor being used int he measurement circuit. The data will be reprocessed. Saturation Vapor pressure and Vapor pressure will have to be reprocessed also. Add 1.06 degrees to the temperature data. Correct Sat Vap Press using the Buck approximation: Es = 6.1121exp((17.502*T)/(240.97 + T) where T is the temperature in C. Correct Vapor pressure using: E = (RH*Es)/100 |
