Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E21 - False signal |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1, sgpsirs20sE21.a0 |
Description: | During clear-sky conditions, downwelling shortwave values spike downward approximately 50 to 200 W/m^2 around 22:15 UTC for about 15 minutes. This problem occurs at about the same time for the same duration each day during the indicated period of the year. This effect is due to a shadow from the Rotating Bird Deterrent (RBD) installed earlier in the year to prevent extensive bird droppings at the site. The RBD is installed at such a location that it will partially shade the downwelling shortwave PSP from 19 October to 23 February of the year. |

Description: | A large discrepancy between the measured values of downwelling hemispheric shortwave radiation and the derived values occurred on 2/02 at the listed sites. The difference is on the order of 200 Wm^(-2) at E2 and to a lesser extent at the other affected stations. This problem most likely resulted from a previous day or night snow/ice accumulation on the Direct(NIP), Downwelling Sortwave(PSP) and/or Downwelling Diffuse(8-48) instruments. During the morning hours of 02/02, Approx 1300-2000GMT, snow/ice was covering one or more of these three instruments resulting in faulty readings and incorrect derived downwelling shortwave values as well. Instrument readings indicate the problem resolved itself later in the day through normal meltoff. |

Description: | During the pyrgeometer instrument (PIR) changout a datalogger program was loaded with incorrect calibration coefficients for the shortwave instruments. The affected measurements were : downwelling diffuse (DD), upwelling shortwave(US), direct normal (NIP) and downwelling shortwave(DS) Recalculate irradiances by determining original mV signal and reapplying the correct calibration coefficients. For each one minute irradiance value perform the following calculations by instrument: DD(corrected) = (DD/107.24)*118.11 US(corrected) = (US/113.19)*118.21 NIP(corrected)= (NIP/120.17)*119.08 DS(corrected) = (DS/118.46)*117.33 |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E21 - Instrument logger time problem, Unknown |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1, sgpsirs20sE21.a0 |
Description: | Values of diffuse hemispheric shortwave radiation differ from derived values by at most 70 Wm^(-2). The incident appears to be isolated to 3/21, 3/22, and 3/23. An estimation of solar noon using downwelling shortwave hemispheric irradiance from the PSP shows solar noon to oocur at around 1845GMT on 3/21. Calculated solar noon occurs at E21 at 1831GMT for 3/21/2004. There appears to be a time discrepancy in the datalogger for these dates. 04/01 is the next date with enough sun to determine solar noon and compare to calculated. The data from this date appears correct. Ronald Reed [rreed@ops.sgp.arm.gov] reports the logger did not receive any reportable time updates during the late March time period. We don't know what happened during these three dates but from 3/24 on data looks acceptable. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E27 - incorrect tracking |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsE27.00, sgpsirsE27.b1, sgpsirs20sE27.a0 |
Description: | The solar tracker at E27 was not functioning properly. The problem affected tracker mounted instruments: downwelling diffuse 8-48 and direct normal pyrheliometer NIP. After tracker adjustment on 4/14/2004 1700GMT the tracker stopped tracking properly during afternoon hours. Attempts to correct tracker operation throughout the failure period resulted in variations on incorrect tracker operation. No replacement tracker was available. After adjustment on 9/15/2004 the tracker problem was resolved. It is unclear what, other than typical az and zen tracker software changes by field techs, corrected the problem. This problem period corresponds to the first time range specified (4/14 to 9/15). On 10/27/2004 a replacement tracker was installed at E27. Technical difficulties kept tracker out of service until 11/05/2004. The replacement tracker at E27 was put into serice by the field techs on 11/05/2004 1830GMT. The tracker has been tracking correctly since this time. This problem period corresponds to the second time range (10/27 to 11/05). |

Pattern of differences is indicative of a dirty downwelling shortwave dome. Maintenance on 6/9 cleaned water spots on the dome. DataStreams: | sgpsirsE24.b1, sgpsirs20sE24.a0 |
Description: | The NIP is shaded by the EF laptop computer enclosure near sunrise during parts of the Spring and Summer. This has occurred from 04/08 to 05/20 and from 07/26 to 09/06 every year since 2001 and will occur during these date ranges in the future as well. The shading occurs for a few minutes each day between 1200 and 1300 GMT depending on the time of the year. For the early dates, shading occurs a little after 1200 GMT and by 05/20 shading happens nearer to 1300 GMT. In late July the shading occurs near 1300 GMT and closer to 1200 GMT by 09/06. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirsE24.00, sgpsirsE24.b1, sgpsirs20sE24.a0 |
Description: | The Downwelling Shortwave Hemispheric (DSH) Irradiance data were erratic. The Pyranometer instrument dome at this site was likely dirty given the relatively large spread between the measured DSH and derived DSH readings during the middle part of the day (up to 50 W/m^2). Rain on 04/06 most likely contributed to this problem. Preventative maintenance on 4/14 effectively cleaned the pyranometer dome. Preventative maintenance reports indicate dry-water spots on dome when it was cleaned on 4/14. |
