Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E4 - Incorrect soil moisture data |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE4.b1 |
Description: | The temperature rise readings on both the east and west profiles are too high. This also causes the matric potential and water content data to be incorrect. For the first, third and fourth date ranges, measurements are incorrect for all sensor locations (each depth on both profiles). For the second date range, measurements are incorrect for the lowest 8 sensor locations (the 60cm, 85cm, 125cm, and 175cm depths on both profiles). |

DataStreams: | sgpswatsE5.b1 |
Description: | The temperature rise values were too high (> 20 deg C). Water potential is calculated from a rise (and subsequent drop) in temperature in the sensor that is normally ~1-5 degrees C. When the T_rise is too high, the soil moisture data is dubious at best and unusable at worst. Soil temperatures are OK. |

DataStreams: | sgpswatsE3.b1 |
Description: | The temperature rise readings from the 60-cm depth on the east profile (trise_E) were incorrect. This problem also causes the matric potential (soilwatpot_E) and water content (watcont_E) data for the 60-cm depth to be incorrect. The sensor began to behave erratically at 7:00 GMT on 07/10/2008 before an apparent failure at 10:00 GMT on 08/07/2008. Maintenance on 10/29 corrected the problem. Values of tsoil_E at the 60 cm depth are not impacted by this problem. |

Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E1 - Sensor failure, 5cm E |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE1.b1 |
Description: | Both trise and tsoil for the 5cm E sensor began to drop out intermittently reporting both incorrect values and values of -9999 starting on 08/18/2007. Since this date, there have been periods where values of -9999 have been reported continuously for months at a time, but the sensor always seems to come back eventually and report values that appear correct. Currently, this sensor is reporting normal values again but has failed as recently as 10/08/08. When this sensor is failing, it typically impacts tsoil_E, trise_E, soilwatpot_E, and watcont_E. However, there are cases where tsoil_E appears OK while the other variables are incorrect. Instrument was removed from service 20091014. |

Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E8 - Sensor failure, 35cm W |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE8.b1 |
Description: | The sensor installed at 35 cm at the west profile has produced questionable data ince it was installed back in 1996. Once the sensor began to stabilize at 17:00 GMT on 07/20/99, it has produced questionable or incorrect values of temperature rise. From 07/20/99 to the present date, 35cm W temperature rise values have stayed within a range of approximately 0.8-2.0 C, while the sensor from the 35cm E profile has produced an approximate range of 1.5-4.0 C. In addition, the calibration for this sensor is so bad it is not possible to correct it using field data. The range of temperature rise values produced by this sensor is too limited to reliably re-calibrate the instrument. Under the old ARM calibration for SWATS, the calibrated reference temperature change should fall within a range of 1.45-4.00 C (the new range is 1.38-3.96 C). For this sensor, the reference temperature change has fallen within an approximate range of 0.2-1.7 C and the calibration is actually adjusting the trise measurements in the wrong direction. Therefore, all temperature rise, matric potential and water content data are all highly suspect from the 35cm W sensor. The soil temperature data appear to be OK. Instrument removed from service 20091110. |

DataStreams: | sgpswatsE1.b1 |
Description: | Both trise and tsoil for the 15cm W sensor began to drop out intermittently reporting both incorrect values and values of -9999 starting on 05/29/2008. Currently, this sensor is reporting mainly values of -9999 for all measurements with a few random incorrect values from time to time. This problem impacts tsoil_W, trise_W, soilwatpot_W, and watcont_W. Instrument removed from service 20091014. |

Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E20 - Sensor failure, 15cm E |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE20.b1 |
Description: | The temperature rise readings from the 15-cm depth on the east profile were incorrect (0 or -9999) This also caused the matric potential and water content data for the 15-cm depth to be incorrect. Soil temperature data measurements also failed 20060502. No data from this sensor should be used at or beyond this date. |

DataStreams: | sgpswatsE20.b1 |
Description: | Following a period of missing values (-9999) from 08/05/05-08/17/05, sensors at several depths failed. Temperature rise values from the 60cm West and 85cm East profile sensors were very noisy after 08/17/05. These data, including matric potential and water content, were incorrect. Temperature rise values from the 85cm West and 125cm East profile sensors are reported as 0 after 08/17/05. Matric potential and water content data for these sensor were also incorrect. Soil temperatures for these depths were unaffected. Temperature rise and soil temperature measurements for the 60cm East and 125cm West profile sensors were reported as 0 or -9999 after 08/17/05. Matric potential and water content data for these sensors were also incorrect. |

Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E27 - Incorrect serial numbers |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE27.b1 |
Description: | The wiring at E27 from the Campbell Scientific 229-L sensors is backwards. This issue impacts the following variables but does not impact data quality: serial_numbers_W, serial_numbers_E. All serial numbers stored in the serial_numbers_W variable apply to data stored in the trise_E and tsoil_E variables, and vice versa. Thus, the user should be aware that the trise_W, trise_E, tsoil_W, and tsoil_E variables actually contain data from the opposite profile. |

Subject: | SGP/SWATS/E1 - Instrument failure |
DataStreams: | sgpswatsE1.b1 |
Description: | The diurnal temperature change in the tsoil measurements from all sensors installed below 5 cm at this facility appear questionable. On a daily basis, the diurnal trends in the tsoil measurements from depths below 5 cm did not match the above ground tref measurements or the tsoil measurements from the 5 cm W sensor (the 5 cm E sensor has failed). The tsoil measurements from these deeper sensors began to decrease prior to solar noon nearly every day. Also, the magnitudes of the diurnal change in these instruments appear to be the same for all sensors (Normally, the diurnal changes in tsoil are damped as we progress deeper below the surface). Attempts to correct the problem were unsuccessful until the time of site decommissioning. This facility was decommissioned and maintenance efforts ceased 10/1/2009. |

DataStreams: | sgpswatspcpE19.b1 |
Description: | The tipping-bucket rain gauge for the swatspcp was not functioning correctly. The rain gauge measured no precipitation after 03/29 even though most of the state received some precipitation on 04/12-04/13. The rain gauge was found to have a broken wire and was replaced on 05/21. Rainfall totals compare well with the El Reno Oklahoma Mesonet site for the last major rain event on 05/26. |
