Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - Tracker Problem |
DataStreams: | twpskyradC2.00, twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | The observers reported that the tracker was not shading the radiometers. The sun sensor was damaged by moisture due to a missing front window. The tracker had been in sun-sensing mode so required the sensor to maintain its proper orientation. Troy Culgan placed the tracker in time-track mode (calculates solar position based on time, date, and location) until the sun sensor can be repaired. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - IRT affected by rain or shutter |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC2.a1, twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | During this time period, the SKYRAD IRT data was affected by rain events due to a shutter which was installed to protect the optics from being emersed in rainwater. While the shutter was closed, or if water got on the lens, the IRT data was invalid. If water did get on the lens, the contamination usually persisted until an operator cleaned the optics. The configuration of the IRT was changed Oct 29, 2001. The IRT was mounted such that the field of view is directed downward at a 30 degree elevation angle and reflected to the vertical by a front-surfaced, gold-plated mirror. This configuration prevents rain from directly striking the lens and collecting in the lens barrel. Data from 11/98-2/99 were examined and times when the data are invalid are identified below. Data from 3/99-10/01 also contain periods of invalid data, but it is left to the data users to identify those periods and filter the data according to their needs. 12/10/1998 04:30 - 12/10/1998 05:30 12/10/1998 11:30 - 12/10/1998 12:30 12/10/1998 13:00 - 12/10/1998 17:00 12/17/1998 02:30 - 12/17/1998 04:00 12/17/1998 13:00 - 12/17/1998 15:00 12/23/1998 18:00 - 12/23/1998 20:00 12/30/1998 21:00 - 12/31/1998 03:00 01/12/1999 22:35 - 01/12/1999 23:45 01/13/1999 14:16 - 01/13/1999 16:35 01/13/1999 21:41 - 01/13/1999 23:30 |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - IRT bias |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | The IRT appears to be measuring higher sky temperatures than the AERI. There is no indication as to its cause or whether the IRT or the AERI is at fault. PRB note: because the AERI is calibrated between each sample, the AERI data has a high degree of confidence and the bias is likely on the part of the IRT. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - Reprocess: Incorrect datalogger program affecting PIR1 and PIR2 |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC2.a0, twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | The excitation delays using in measuring the PIR1 case thermistor commonly named "Case1" and the PIR2 dome thermistor called "Dome2" were discovered to have been incorrectly set to 0 in the Skyrad datalogger program when the new CR23X based Skyrad loggers were installed. The result of no delay in these measurements results in an error in the measured resistance of the thermistors, Case1 and Dome2, and thus the calculated PIR1 and PIR2 irradiances. The absolute value of the errors are inversely proportial to temperature. Users can apply the temperature dependent irradiance corrections shown in the table below. Recall that the reported uncertainty of PIRs is typically +-.25% to +-.5% or 1 to 2 W/m2. The error corrections become the same order of magnitude or larger than the instrument uncertainties at or below 260K or 9F. Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - Reprocess: Longwave Calibration error |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | Modified pyrgeometer calibration procedures were implemented beginning in December 2003. These modified procedures introduced a calibration bias in the longwave data. The previous procedures were re-implemented at all sites between December 2005 and February 2006 to restore proper calibrations. The data collected while the incorrect procedures were in place are being reprocessing to remove the calibration bias. Note, this also affected standard deviation, maximum and minimum data fields. |
