Satellite Data (in HDF format) now available from the ARM Archive

(11/14/1997)

Data derived from AVHRR, GOES, and GMS satellites are now available from the ARM Archive User Interface. Metadata have been added to the interface menus to allow for the selection of HDF files from the measurements, instruments, and data streams query options. Additional information on HDF data can be found at the following URLs:

Special considerations for requesting HDF data

  1. These HDF files are much larger than the typical ARM CDF files.
  2. Retrieval requests totaling more than 600 MB do not automatically start retrieval processing. Operator intervention is required to assure that disk space is available in the /armguest FTP area. Questions about the status of retrivals can be addressed to Archive User Services by e-mail to armarchive@ornl.gov or telephone 865-241-4851. FTP transfer of very large requests may be too slow. If preferred, please contact Archive User Services to have your request distributed on tape.
  3. Retrieval requests totaling more than 2 GB (2,000 MB) will cause a data base error (underneath the user interface) and the interface page that reports the number of files and sum of the size will truncate abnormally. At the bottom of the page you will see "...DB - Library attempted to bind to non-existent column." When this message is encountered, use the BACK button on your browser and reduce the number of days or data streams requested. Submitting smaller, multiple requests will not cause problems for the Archive retrieval process.

The following table provides information about the frequency and size of HDF files. This information can be used to help estimate the size of your request.
