NSA/MMCR/C1 - NSA/C1/MMCR- Incorrect Calibrations
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
From 3-July 2001 to 26-July 2001, the NSA MMCR calibration for the
two coded pulse modes is incorrect. The values of reflectivity computed
by the radars autocalibration software are wrong because they use the
wrong radar constant. The correct radar constants are: 8-bit coded
mode RC=16.344 and for the 32-bit coded RC=7.313.

The only impact of the incorrect radar constants should be reflectivity
value
Measurements:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1:
  • MMCR Reflectivity, Best estimate, Hydrometer(ReflectivityBestEstimate)
  • Reflectivity(Reflectivity)
  • MMCR Reflectivity, clutter removed(ReflectivityNoClutter)

NSA/MMCR/C1 - Pulse controller failed due to water damage
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
Instrument had water damage that fried the pulse controller
card. Images appear normal, but no clouds were detected
during this period because no radar pulse was being emitted.

Note from Karen Johnson: the ARSCL and MMCRMODE data fields
may or may not be suspect, depending on whether ARSCL correctly
identified the MMCR data as bad.

NSA/MMCR/C1 - No radar pulse transmission
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
A fault in transmission occurred so no radar pulse was emitted and therefore no return
signal, only noise, was received.

Note from Karen Johnson: the ARSCL and MMCRMODE data fields
may or may not be suspect, depending on whether ARSCL correctly
identified the MMCR data as bad.

NSA/MMCR/C1 - MUX failure
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
Data values dropped to background clear sky (noise level).
Other cloud instruments indicated it was cloudy. The MUX
card was replaced and good data started flowing again at
00 GMT on 3/19.

Note from Karen Johnson: the ARSCL and MMCRMODE data fields
may or may not be suspect, depending on whether ARSCL correctly
identified the MMCR data as bad.

NSA/ARSCL/C1 - Reflectivity values unreliable
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
Reflectivity dBZ values should not be used. The reported cloud boundaries may
underestimate cloud tops, particularly for high or thick clouds. Also thin high clouds may have
been missed entirely, especially if there were lower-level cloud layers below them. During
this time period, the MMCR was transmitting in circular polarization, rather than
(correct) linear polarization. This caused reported Reflectivity values to be too low by an
unknown amount, resulting in an effective loss of radar sensitivity.

Areas identified as have having hydrometeor detections are correct, however some areas
marked as clear may in fact contain cloud due to the MMCR's low sensitivity during this time.

NSA/ARSCL/C1 - Reflectivity too high
DataStreams:nsaarscl1clothC1.c1
Description:
The calibration of the MMCR was incorrect during this period, causing large positive
shifts in reported reflectivity values. As a result, the reflectivies reported by ARSCL are
also too high. However, other radar moments (MeanDopplerVelocity and SpectralWidth) and
cloud boundaries reported in ARSCL data files are not affected and can be used.

Do not use ReflectivityBestEstimate, Reflectivity, or ReflectivityNoClutter values during
this period.

  • Reflectivity(Reflectivity)
