SGP/SMOS/E21 - Wind Monitor Impacting Bird Spikes

The wind direction is flatlining and wind speed occasionally does not compare well with 
co-located ECOR.  Problems with the height of the mount caused the vane to impact the bird 
deterrent spikes and "catch".  Symptoms appear as winds coming out of a 255 to 270 
direction for long period of times.  The wind speed values are also affected as the wind

The wind sensor bearings were failing causing the wind speed sensor to report lower than 
actual wind speeds when the winds were below 2 m/s.  The wind monitor was replaced on 
05/29/2007 but this failed to correct the problem.  Subsequently, the site was flooded and it

SGP/SMOS/E27 - Incorrect Offset for Wind Directon

An incorrect offset of 7 degrees was added to the wind direction to
   correct for misalignment of the towers to true north. The wind direction data may be 
corrected but the vector averaged wind speed cannot. Subsequent audits have highlighted 
problems with past measurements of tower alignments.  All corrections to wind direction are 
being removed and Users are directed to view the Instrument Handbook for a table listing 
all tower alignment deviations from true north.  Users can adjust the data at their 
discretion.
