Description:
Radar sensitivity was diminished by approximately 15 - 20 dBZ during
this period.  The result is that upper level cloud tops may be missed
and thin clouds, particularly thin cirrus, may not be detected during
this period.  Reflectivity was correctly calibrated, so values are
correct where signals were detected.  The problem was caused by
lightning damage to the low noise amplifier (LNA).  The LNA was replaced
on 20060718.

Description:
After the upgrade to PIRAQ-III, the reflectivies are too high by ~ 23 dBZ.  The problem 
was caused by a failure of one of the power supplies that turned off one of the rf switches.

The data can be used but 23 dB should be subtracted from the reported values.  Due to the 
unknown exact isolation the rf switch offers, one should assume that the reflectivity 
will then be accurate to +/- 3 dBZ.

Description:
Upon installing the KAZR at Darwin, we found that the antenna's subreflector was loose.  
Based on measurements from the manufacturer, a 0.001" change can change the antenna gain 
of approximately 1 dB.  This adds an uncertainty of 2 dBZ reflectivity measurements.  We 
measured slightly more than 0.100" off nominal position.  However the manufacturer does 
not measure the subreflector location for each antenna so we do not know how far off, if at 
all, the subreflector is from its position when it was characterized at the test range.

We have contacted CSIRO and are investigating the possibility of sending the antenna to 
their near-field antenna test range.  In several months we will also have a Ka-SACR at 
Darwin that will enable us to do a cross-calibration.
