SGP/SONDE/C1 - Mixed use of RS92-SGP and RS92-KL radiosondes
DataStreams:sgpsondewnpnC1.b1
Description:
Because of a manufacturer's production problem, we will be using both RS92-SGP (GPS
windfinding and RS92-KL (Loran windfinding) radiosondes at the SGP/CF starting February 10,
2006. The radiosonde type used for the each sounding may be determined by looking the
metadata variable "launch_status" in the netCDF data files.
Measurements:sgpsondewnpnC1.b1:
  • wstat
  • lon
  • Mean Wind Speed(wspd)
  • Wind Direction(deg)
  • Northward Wind Component(v_wind)
  • lat
  • Eastward Wind Component(u_wind)

SGP/SONDE/C1 - Increased precision for alt, dp, pres, rh, tdry
DataStreams:sgpsondewnpnC1.b1
Description:
The output precision of the following variables was increased 20060928

alt changed from 1m to 0.1m
dp changed from 0.1degC to 0.01degC
pres changed from 0.1 hPa to 0.01 hPa
RH changed from 1%RH to 0.01%RH
tdry changed from .1degC to 0.01degC

Note that the increase in precision does not necessarily imply an increase in accuracy.
Users are cautioned to continue to use their best scientific judgement when using these or
any other data.
Measurements:sgpsondewnpnC1.b1:
  • alt
  • Dry Bulb Temperature(tdry)
  • Dewpoint Temperature(dp)
  • Humidity, relative(rh)
  • Pressure, atmospheric, constant value of model level, RUC model output(pres)

SGP/MWR/C1/E14 - Freezing rain-Incorrect rain flag
DataStreams:sgpmwrlosC1.b1, sgpmwrlosE14.b1, sgpmwrtipC1.a1, sgpmwrtipE14.a1
Description:
Between 01/12 and 01/15 brightness temperatures show high values (Tb > 100 K) indicative
of rain, however the wet_window flag is 0 (indicative of no rain). During that time there
where freezing conditions with ice pellets that were not detected by the sensor. The high
brightness temperatures may be due to melting ice on the window.
Measurements:sgpmwrtipE14.a1:
  • wet_window

SGP/WACR/C1 - Reflectivity and Height Offsets
DataStreams:sgpwacrC1.b1, sgpwacrspeccmaskcopolC1.a0, sgpwacrspeccmaskxpolC1.a0
Description:
The instrument vendor has informed us of a range (height) offset of 13 m and has provided
an updated reflectivity calibration. All values reported for 'Reflectivity' are
approximately 3 dB too low. In addition, the Reflectivity in the first and fourth range gates
(starting from the surface) need to be further corrected by an additional 2.7 and -0.9 dB,
respectively. The 'height' field values are 13.33 m too low. The data will be
reprocessed to correct these problems.

Update: The sgpwacrC1.b1 data were reprocessed to correct the height and reflectivity
offsets. The corrected data were archived 20100910-20100915.
Measurements:sgpwacrspeccmaskcopolC1.a0:
  • Cloud, reflectivity, at altitude(Reflectivity)
  • heights
