Description:
The extended range detector had failed and a borrowed replacement detector was installed. 
The replacement detector had enough air present in the dewar to cause the cryogenic 
cooler to work at full current. The detector was still warmer than optimal and there is more 
noise present in the data than is considered normal. The data must be used with 
discretion. The system was shut off on 020516 due to noise and rising detector temperatures.

Failure of the cryogenic cooler for the AERI detector resulted in the instrument being 
shut down during the interval January 20, 2003 @1835GMT until January 25, 2003 @0041GMT, 
when a new cryogenic cooler was installed. All data are missing for this period. Data after 
the new cooler was installed are within normal acceptable limits.

Description:
In January 2003, the cryogenic cooler current for the Barrow, AERI detector was steadily 
increasing. This increase is a sign of cooler failure. On January 16,2003, the cooler 
began to make noise. The cooler was shut-off on January 17,2003 and any condensed gases were 
allowed to vent. Condensed gases in the detector dewar cause a cooler to work harder and 
increase the current. The cooler was then resealed and turned on. However, the cooler did 
not recover and the current was at a maximum. The cooler was unable to completely cool 
the detector and the detector never achieved a temperature below 72K. Higher detector 
temperature increases instrument noise. The instrument was shut off on January 20, 2003 at 
1835GMT to prevent a catatrophic failure due to complete cooler failure and 
repressurization of the detector dewar, which would result in a subsequent implosion of the dewar.

NSA/AERI/C1 - Excessive Noise in C1 AERI data

Description:
Initially it was believed that the greater noise level in AERI C1 data was due to the 
extended range detector, which has lower sensitivity. However, when the S01 AERI was 
installed next to the C1 AERI and it stabilized on 9/30/2005, it was observed that the noise 
levels on the newly installed S01 AERI were much lower than for the C1 AERI. Therefore, the 
excessive noise of the C1 AERI is not due to the fundamental nature of the extended range 
detector but instead due to failure within the detector. 

The failure could be due to a poor D* value of too high a detector temperature. It could 
also be caused by optical alignment issues. In either case, the spectral radiance data 
have much more noise and that results in larger error bars when using the radiance data, 
especially long wave data as monitored by the LW_HBB_NEN flag.

On 9/30/2005, the S01 AERI, which is next to the C1 AERI, came on-line and is producing 
low noise data. The S01 data should be used instead of the C1 data where low noise 
requirements are needed.

On 6/26/2006, the S01 AERI went offline due to a laser failure.  The C1 AERI was moved to 
the connex where data were within reasonable limits for an extended range detector.  
Beginning 20060701, the C1 data are the preferred AERI data set at the NSA Barrow location.

system on June 30, 2006 beginning 17:00 GMT.

Description:
On 18 Oct 2006, a thermistor that measures the temperature of the blackbody support 
structure failed, resulting in erroneously high values.  This measurement, which is captured by 
the field "BBsupportStructureTemp", provides the temperature of the radiance that is 
reflected into the blackbody (i.e., captured by the field "calibrationAmbientTemp"), and 
thus the calibrated radiance (the field "mean_rad") was incorrect and outside the ARM 
specification that the AERI data should be absolutely calibrated to within 1% of the ambient 
radiance.  The broken thermistor was fixed on 22 Nov 2006.

Fortunately, since the emissivity of the blackbodies is so high, absolute accuracy of the 
calibrationAmbientTemp is not required but should be within a few degrees.  The radiance 
data have been recalibrated using the ambient blackbody temperature (the field 
"calibrationCBBtemp") as a surrogate of the calibrationAmbientTemp. Historically, the 
calibrationAmbientTemp and calibrationCBBtemp measurements have been within 1-2 deg. As a result of 
this recalibration, the radiance data are now absolutely calibrated to better than 1%.

A heavy, wet snowstorm late on April 17th and early on the 18th resulted in wet snow 
packing around the arms of the AERI's hatch controller.  This resulted in the ventilator fan 
not shutting down when the hatch closed, and thus snow was packed into the front of the 
AERI (i.e., around the scene mirror and blackbodies).  The data for this period should not 
be used.

Description:
The blackbody support structure temperature sensor on the NSA.C1 AERI were biased high by 
approximately 25K beginning 20071217 and became progressively worse until the sensor was 
replaced 20080213.  The temperature from this sensor is used to calibrate the radiance 
data for the AERI.  The AERI data have been reprocessed by replacing the data from the 
failed sensor with the cold blackbody temperature sensor data and producing 
corrected/recalibrated radiance data.

The reprocessed data were archived in March 2008.
