SGP/SIRS/E7 - Upwelling Longwave inconsistent
DataStreams:sgpsirsE7.b1, sgpsirs20sE7.a0
Description:
The upwelling IR PIR instrument (up_long_hemisp) had bad connections during this time
period. The case thermistor (Mux set #2) was reading erratic values and corrupting the
up_long_hemisp data completely.

The net_ir was valid but cannot be corrected without the case thermistor measurement to
determine the incoming IR (i.e. up_long_hemisp).

SGP/SIRS/E9 - Downwelling SW sensor alignment/level
DataStreams:sgpsirsE9.b1, sgpsirs20sE9.a0
Description:
On clear days, the down_short_hemisp data (PSP instrument) exhibit asymmetry in its daily
output curve especially when compared to derived downwelling shortwave. Ops corrected
the problem by re-leveling the PSP on 3/16/2010. The issue may likely be due to a slowly
sinking platform at this site or inadvertent loosening of instrument hold down screws.

Problem may have developed slowly over the last year. Corrections are not easily
quantifiable. Suggest using derived downwelling shortwave which is not dependent on the PSP
instrument:

derived DS = down_short_diffuse + short_direct_normal * cos(zenith angle)

SGP/SIRS/E21 - Tracker failure
DataStreams:sgpsirsE21.b1, sgpsirs20sE21.a0
Description:
First apparent on 03/26, the short_direct_normal values were incorrect after approximately
1700GMT each day. The tracker was found to have excessive clock drift and was reset by
site ops on 05/04/2010 and returned to service at 1935GMT. The down_short_diffuse_hemisp
values appear unaffected by the tracker misalignment.

The short_direct_normal data values are suspect after approximately 1800GMT each day from
03/26 to 04/26 and after 1700GMT from 04/27 to the end of the period. The
short_direct_normal data are not recoverable but can be calculated indirectly using the following
relationship for each minute of data:
down_short_hemsip = short_direct_normal * cos(zenith angle) + down_short_diffuse

SGP/SIRS/E11 - Multiplexer problem
DataStreams:sgpsirsE11.b1, sgpsirs20sE11.a0
Description:
Values of down_short_hemisp, down_long_shaded_hemisp and up_long_hemisp began
intermittently dropping out beginning 04/29. This problem gradually became worse, but remained
intermittent from day to day.

Site ops reseated the mux connections and replaced the logger wiring panel on 6/1 approx
1600GMT which corrected the problem.

The automatic quality control flags for the three affected datastreams can be very
effective at determining the suspect/bad data values for exclusion. Alternatively the affected

SGP/SIRS/E6 - Datalogger failure
DataStreams:sgpsirsE6.b1, sgpsirs20sE6.a0
Description:
During this time period all SIRS instruments experienced intermittent data dropouts.
Starting 6/9/2010 the up_long hemisp and up_short_hemisp instruments dropped out. On 6/10
approximately 1800GMT the down_long hemisp instrument and down_short_hemisp instruments
started dropping out. In addition, after this time all values from the logger became
intermittent. On 06/12/2010 site ops replaced the logger and wiring panel at approx. 1500 GMT.
All systems were returned to service approximately 1630GMT.

SGP/SIRS/E11 - Intake Fan Failure
DataStreams:sgpsirsE11.b1, sgpsirs20sE11.a0
Description:
Data were missing from this station from 5/27 to 6/1. After collections resumed on 6/1,
the first night (6/2) data revealed down_short_hemisp (PSP) and down_short_diffuse_hemisp
(8-48) data consistent with ventilator fan failure or obstructed fan filter resulting in
large thermal offsets.

On 6/14 Ops cleaned obstructed ventilator fans on both 8-48 and PSP instruments which
corrected the large thermal offsets. The PSP was seriously affected and possibly the 8-48 to
a lesser degree.

Due to correction on a partly cloudy day the degree of thermal offset cannot be well
quantified. Users are advised to avoid the PSP data (down_short_hemisp) completely during
this time period. The 8-48 data (down_short_diffuse_hemisp) are suspect.

Description:
After instrument replacement 8/5/2010 approx 1700GMT the short_direct_normal values became

The short_direct_normal (NIP instrument) data are not recoverable during this period.

SGP/SIRS/E21 - Reprocessing: TimeCheck Error
DataStreams:sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1, sgpsirs20sE21.a0
Description:
The EF data system lost communication with the GPS likely starting on or around June 7th,
the max time set For E21 was -5.04 sec. Since then, it has been increasing steadily:

Jun 8 Offset: -267.449039
Jun 9 Offset: -541.038624
Jun 10 Offset: -814.469141
Jun 11 Offset: -1076.862114
Jun 12 Offset: -1350.330223
Jun 13 Offset: -1623.639335
Jun 14 Offset: -1897.047754
Jun 15 Offset: -2170.552312
Jun 16 Offset: -2422.130746
Jun 17 Offset: -2684.607495
Jun 18 - Jun 22 (unknown)
Jun 23 Offset: -4204.730579

If the E21 system clock drifts the E21 Datalogger clocks will be set to the same incorrect
time. SIRS irradiance data will be correct but the corresponding time stamp cannot be
accurately known or simply corrected for.

SGP/SIRS/E11 - Reprocess: Incorrect calibration coefficients
DataStreams:sgpsirsE11.b1, sgpsirs20sE11.a0
Description:
Likely near 00:00GMT on 11/18/2010 (Site is missing data from 0000 to 0006 on 11/18) the
calibration coefficients and serial numbers for the SIRS program at E11 reverted to the
previous year's(2009/2010) installed shortwave instruments. Site ops re-loaded the correct
program on 11/24. Reprocessing will be required for all shortwave instruments.
Incorrect cal coeffs applied during this period:
Diffuse PSP: 113.21 W/(m^2*mV)
PSP-US: 115.00 W/(m^2*mV)
NIP: 115.83 W/(m^2*mV)
PSP-DS: 115.95 W/(m^2*mV)
Correct cal coeffs to apply:
Diffuse PSP: 111.05 W/(m^2*mV)
PSP-US: 115.10 W/(m^2*mV)
NIP: 127.22 W/(m^2*mV)
PSP-DS: 121.20 W/(m^2*mV)

Back out old cal apply new:
Diffuse PSP(down_short_diffuse_hemisp): 111.05/113.21=0.98092
PSP-US(up_short_hemisp):115.10/115.00=1.0010
NIP(short_direct_normal):127.22/115.83=1.09833
PSP-DS(down_short_hemisp): 121.20/115.95=1.0453
