SGP - Best Estimate Flux VAP files
DataStreams:sgpbeflux1longC1.c1
Description:
The Best Estimate Flux VAP uses input from the 3 radiometer platforms located
at the SGP Central Facility to determine the best estimate of the various
broadband irradiance measurements. Prior to the installation and operation of
the 3rd set of radiometers at the SGP CF, a data set spanning 19950519 -
19970321 has been produced manually, and made available to the ARM community
via the ARM Archive. The purpose of this DQR is to notify users of the above
date range that covers the period the Best Estimate was manually produced, and
to point users to the ARM Technical Report Web page at
http://www.arm.gov/docs/documents/tech_reports/index.html for documentation on
the 'manual' methodology used, i.e. the documentation. Users should refer to
the ARM Technical Report titled 'The ARM Southern Great Plains Central Facility
Best Estimate Radiative Flux CD Presented at the April, 2002 ARM Science
Team Meeting St. Petersburg, FL'

SGP/AERI/E14 - Sampling rate changes
DataStreams:sgpaerich1E14.b1, sgpaerich2E14.b1, sgpaerisummaryE14.b1, sgpaeriengineerE14.b1
Description:
The sampling rate of the SGP.E14 AERI was changed 4 times during July and August 2005.
Data quality is not affected but faster sampling rate means that less scans are coadded and
the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectral data will be different.

The E14 scan rate was increased to rapid sampling mode to support efforts at the SGP.
However, a hard drive failure occurred during rapid sampling. A second hard drive was
installed. We tested the new drive to make sure there was no problem by running the system at
regular sampling speed. There were no problems so the AERI sampling rate was increased to
rapid sampling mode. However, during observation, it was noted that the computer and hard
drive could not keep up with the rapid sampling rate and the spectral data badly lagged
the summary files, usually by 8 spectra. This lag time could have caused hard drive
corruption because files were still being written when the system was trying to restart at
00:00 GMT. The solution to the problem was to increase the sampling rate. The sampling rates
are listed below.

February 10 2005-July 5 2005 Blackbodies 46 coadds each, Sky view 90 coadds
July 6 2005 - July 22 2005 Blackbodies and Sky view 6 coadds each
July 23 2005 - July 28 2005 hard drive failure, no data
July 29 2005 - August 5 2005 Blackbodies 46 coadds each, Sky view 90 coadds
August 6 2005 - present Blackbodies and Sky view 12 coadds each

Dr. David Turner is preparing a VAP to reduce instrument noise when rapid sampling to the
noise level of normal sampling. This VAP should correct the problem.

SGP/AERI/E14 - QC Data corrupted by static
DataStreams:sgpaerisummaryE14.b1
Description:
The E14 AERI had elevated channel 2 short band responsivity and noise equivalent radiance
values. These values are normally used to evaluate data quality. The cause of these high
values is thought to be due to a static charge. The actual radiance plots are not
affected.

SGP/SIRS/E13 - Reprocessed: Longwave Calibration error
DataStreams:sgpsirsE13.b1
Description:
Modified pyrgeometer calibration procedures were implemented beginning in December 2003.
These modified procedures introduced a calibration bias in the longwave data. The previous
procedures were re-implemented at all sites between December 2005 and February 2006 to
restore proper calibrations.

The data collected while the incorrect procedures were in place have been reprocessed to
remove the calibration bias. The reprocessed 60 second averaged data are based on 3
instantaneous 20 second data records rather than on 60 1 second instantaneous data records.
Still, these data are considered far superior to the originally processed data. The
reprocessed data were archived in October 2006.

BSRN Pyran(PSP1) shadearm off alignment and NIP not tracking
DataStreams:sgpbsrnC1.a1
Description:
Subject: BSRN Data Release (July 15 - July 19, 1994)

Name: Trevor Ley (SRRB\NOAA) Instrument Mentor Dr. John DeLuisi

Email address: trevor@srrb.noaa.gov

Telephone: (303) 497-7315

Institution: SRRB\NOAA

Platform/Measurement: BSRN Pyranometer (PSP1) shadearm off
alignment and NIP not tracking.

        what level data: a1

 period of time in question
        start: July 15, 1994 at 00:00:00 (GMT)

        end: July 19, 1994 at 23:59:59 (GMT)

 Data should be labeled:

-Calculated Global irradiance could be labeled
       "incorrect".
     - NIP not tracking correctly

 Discussion of Problem:

  1. The shadearm on the Pyranometer (PSP1), calculating diffuse
irradiance, was off alignment (power outage).

Use this algorithm to pick out the times that the
     shadearm is off of alignment.

          (PSP2-(NIP*cosine of zenith angle))/PSP1 < .90

   2. NIP tracker was down because of power outage.

Other observations/measurements impacted by this problem:

          * Calculated Global Irradiance and Diffuse Irradiance
          * Direct Normal Irradiance measurement is Wrong

Suggested Corrections of the Problem: None

SGP/AERI/C1 - Reprocessed AERI 00 data
DataStreams:sgpaerich1C1.a2, sgpaerich2C1.a2, sgpaerisummaryC1.a2
Description:
The AERI00 data from 4/10/94 - 7/26/95 was reprocessed as outlined in P950525.4 to correct
for a obstruction in the instrument's field of view. The details of this correction are
given in C951207.1. This correction assumed that the obstruction was unchaged over this
time period. However, it was recently discovered, by examination of the preprocessed
QME AERI/LBLRTM data that the data from 4/10/94 - 4/27/94 was "different" than the rest of
the reprocessed QME results. Examination of personal logs kept by staff at the
University of Wisconsin - Madison showed that the AERI00 instrument was moved on 4/27/94 and
therefore there it is possible that the obstruction in the field of view was changed. It is
recommended that the reprocessed AERI00 data from 4/10/94 - 4/27/94 be labelled as questionable.
