Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager
of the automated quality assurance results for the December 2000
Oklahoma Mesonet data.

Notes:

2 ice storms in December caused many QA problems in the 
Mesonet.  The storm that occurred on Christmas day was the
most severe.  That particular event caused the wind sensors
to be frozen in place at 84 stations for anywhere from 1 to
11 days straight!  In addition, the ice coated temperature and
RH shields, pyranometers, and rain gauges.  The ice also
made roads impassable for techs who tried to repair communi-
cation links that were knocked out due to ice damage.

Oklahoma Mesonet data.

A major ice storm took place from January 28-30 across the
northwest one-third of Oklahoma.  The wind sensors became
frozen at over 40 stations.  

Several occurrences in which soil temperature sensors have
"heaved" themselves out of the ground have been noted by
techs recently.  After analyzing the soil temperature data 
for January, it appears that 9 additional stations may be
having the same problem.  Trouble tickets have been issued
so that the suspect sites can be visited during this coming
month.  The unusually wet and cold winter is likely to blame.

Oklahoma Mesonet data.



3 more ice storms hit the state during February.  The first
storm lasted from the 8th through the 11th and affected much 
of northwest Oklahoma.  The second event lasted from the 15th 
through the 18th and affected 27 stations in south-central 
and east-central Oklahoma.  The third event affected over 40 
stations in central and northeastern Oklahoma on the 28th 
of the month.  Wind data from these events was flagged
appropriately in the QA database.

HUGO became the first site to get struck by lightning during
2001.  On the 24th, the site suffered major damage to the 
logger, battery, rain gauge, temperature and RH, and
soil temperatures sensors.

69 trouble tickets were resolved by the techs during March.
WOW!  You won't notice all of that work here in this report,
because some of the fixes were for scheduled rotations of
sensors and work done on OASIS sensors (both of which we
haven't made a part of the monthly QA report as of yet.)

Soil temperature probes under bare soil continue to be a 
major problem as over 20 stations have been found to have
their probes literally heaved out of the ground.  This is
something we've never witnessed in the Mesonet EVER, and
is likely due to all the wet, freezing weather we had this
past winter.  We'll hope it doesn't happen again for at least
8 more years. 

The Mesonet technicians are beginning their Spring Pass 2001
in which all sites will be visited over the next 3 months.
During this pass, they will be taking site photos, maintaining
the vegetation inside the site enclosure, cleaning sensors,
and performing rain gauge tests.

Notes:

The Mesonet Technicians completed the Fall Pass 2001 in late  

December.  Over 1800 site photos were taken.  We are preparing a CD 

that will contain all photos, accomplishments, site visitation 

forms and special findings.  The CD will be available next month.

 

The Technicians also resolved 59 trouble tickets in December!  In 

addition to the tickets shown in this report, their work included 

scheduled rotations of wind monitors and soil temperature sensors,  

as well as replacements of site batteries and rain gauge switches.

 

The monthly analysis identified the site with the maximum rainfall. 

Mt. Herman received 11.8 inches in December, with 7.8 inches falling 

in a single day (December 16)!  

 

In late November, a widespread freezing rain event impacted southern

and eastern Oklahoma.  The wind data from 27 stations were deemed 

erroneous and appropriately flagged in the database.

Notes:

Oklahoma experienced interesting weather during February. Just as the

state was thawing out from the Jan 30-31 ice storm, snow began to    

fall on Feb 5 and continued throughout the next day. A quick-moving 

line of heavy rain came through on the 19th, and a strong front with  

gusty winds brought us cold temperatures on the 25th and 26th.

 

In spite of the weather extremes, the Mesonet Technicians (Leslie, Kris,

Ken and Bill) resolved 50 trouble tickets during the month. Their work  

included replacement of prop- and cup-type anemometers (damaged during  

the ice storm), scheduled rotations of wind direction sensors in the  

southwestern and southeastern parts of the state, replacement of net

radiometers, and initial installations of telnet power switches at 

several base stations.

 

ARS site A130 was vandalized on February 26. The battery, power cable,

and enclosure lock had to be replaced.

Notes:

On March 1 & 2, most of the state reported snow and a few hours of 

freezing rain. In spite of the fact that the effect of this snow/ice 

event was much less severe than the Jan 30-31 storm, the wind obs at 60 

sites had to be manually flagged for time periods ranging from 3 to 26 

hours due to freezing rain coating the anemometers. Temperatures in the 

state quickly recovered and on March 14, OKC set a record high temp for 

that date of 85 degrees. The southeast part of the state experienced 

heavy rains on two occasions, with Idabel leading the pack at nearly 10 

inches of rain during March. 

 

The Mesonet Technicians began Spring Pass 2002 in March.  During the 

month, they also resolved 75 trouble tickets! In addition to the work

detailed in this report, their work included scheduled replacements of 

10m wind direction monitors (in the past four months, 100 have been 

changed out), and replacement of failed net radiometers, soil moisture 

sensors, ground heat flux plates and soil temp probes. They also 

replaced 7 cup-type anemometers with starting threshold problems 

(likely caused by our three winter ice storms). The initial 

installation of telnet power switches at base stations continued.

 

The data collection software and hardware for the ARS Micronet was 

upgraded to match that used by the Mesonet (upgraded in spring of 2001).

The new collection software is called LoggerNet. Thanks to all involved

in the successful completion of this upgrade.

Notes:

On January 30 and 31, a devastating ice storm hit the northwestern half
of Oklahoma.  Among many other effects, the freezing rain coated both 
the cup-type and propvane anemometers.  Erroneous wind observations(both
from frozen sensors and from vibration-induced wind gusts) were wide-
spread.  At 3 sites, the propellers at 10 m actually broke off the vanes
and fell to the ground.  Starting on the first day of the storm and 
continuing for several days, approximately 60,000 wind observations were
manually flagged at 52 Mesonet sites.

The Technicians' work in January included 21 scheduled rotations  
of wind monitors in the northeastern part of the state and replacement
of soil moisture sensors, ground heat flux plates and site batteries. 

The CD containing the Fall Pass 2001 information is ready for 
distribution.  Please e-mail me if you would like us to send you a copy.

Note:

The coming of Spring brought localized heavy storms and high winds to   
our state several times in April.  Southeast Oklahoma received the 
largest cumulative amount of rain. Talihina was the winner, with 8.5 
inches of rain during the month.

A lightning strike occurred at the Clayton site on April 7th. The 
raingauge, temp & relh sensor, pyranometer, datalogger and radio had to 
be replaced. This site has been struck by lightning 6 times in the past 
6 years!

The Technicians were very busy in April resolving 87 trouble tickets.
Their work included datalogger upgrades and replacement of 13 cup-type 
anemometers with starting threshold problems.

Spring Pass 2002 is well underway with approximately 50 sites visited. 

Now that the sun angles are high, the NRAD and NCOM calibrations of 
pyranometers and net radiometers have begun again.  In April, 3 
pyranometers were changed out as part of the scheduled rotations that 
were begun last fall.

Wind direction (10 m) rotations are now complete for all 115 sites.

The Washington site was upgraded to a Supersite on 20 September.   

It was feast or famine across the state for rainfall in September.

inches for the month.  In contrast, much of north central, southeast, 
and the extreme western Panhandle received over 4 inches.  The 
Kingfisher site was the wettest with 7.40 inches.
