Description:
The anemometers located at all 4 levels (2m, 10m, 20m, and 40m) are heated anemometers.  
The thermistors controlling the amount of power applied to the cups of the anemometers 
failed.  This caused too much power to be sent to the heating elements.  The cups bubbled 
and, in some cases, completely melted through.

The winch that lowers the tower booms failed.  Manual testing of the motor and winch 
allowed the booms to be lowered briefly and then raised back into position.  A heavy freezing 
rain/icing event added extra weight to the booms.  This extra weight was suspected as the 
cause as to why the 10m boom became disconnected.  After a new motor was installed and 
all booms were lowered and re-raised the 10m level came back on line.

Description:
The data analysis software for the NSA Met_tower system was upgraded at 2200 GMT
on 8 SEP 1999.  The upgrade included replacement of missing data with -99.99's
when the routine that polled the Met-tower sensors timed out.  This 
resulted in large negative spikes in the 1-min averages.  These spikes 
almost always occurred during the first several 1-min periods of a 
half-hour data processing routine.
On 25 OCT 1999 at 2300 the routine that replaced missing data was changed to 
insert the previous 1-min averaged data instead of -99.99.  Since at the most
only one or two values are missing in ay averaging period, this change 
results in a reasonable estimate of the true mean values

Description:

were often abnormally high and the vector-averaged wind direction
 was often approximately 225 deg.  Starting at 2300 GMT on 25 OCT 99
missing wind data were replaced by the previous 1-min average and 
starting at 2200 GMT on 15 NOV 1999 the computed wind vectors were 
used whenever wind speeds or wind directions were 0.
