Description:
On November 18 the generator was turned off due to a fault in the oil
pressure sensor. It had been having trouble for at least a day prior
to the manual shut-down. ADaM, the MPL, and the WSI were also shut
down to prevent an unscheduled power cycle. As a result, there is a block 
of missing data from November 20-27 for all of the instruments except 
those connected to the Zeno loggers (SKYRAD, GNDRAD, SMET).

Description:
An examination of the raw data indicated that the raw data was apparently good, so the 
data corruption entered the data stream during the calibration of the raw files.  It was 
found that the dark-count offset in the calibration files was far, far too large.  This 
offset was set to zero (the usual procedure except in special cases) and the data now look 
very good.  ASCII files were sent to Andy Vogelmann along with supplementary data (ios, 
etc.) and I mentioned that these data had only been inspected visually and therefore could 
still be erroneous -- althought I don't think Andy will discover any errors because from a 
visual standpoint these data look fine.  It took several days to identify the proble and 
reprocess these data but at least Andy has good data now (or so we hope).  -Jim Barnard

(From Bill Clements) We have been using 6m MSL as the station
elevation of Momote (Manus).  This was based on information
posted near the station barometer in the Momote Weather Service
Office.  It turns out that the official WMO station elevation
for Momote is 4m MSL and the upper air elevation is 5m MSL.

All Manus instruments except the sonde station are at 4m MSL.
The sonde launching station is at 5m MSL.

Description:
More TWP data has arrived from Manus Island for the time period 1999/07/05
to 1999/07/19.  These data reveal an AM shading problem (the subject of a
PIF). The head temperature is in range. A qualitative, visual examination of these data
 indicates that the instrument is in a state of good calibration.  An effort
was made to be more quantitative by performing a Langley analysis. If one
trusts the Langley regressions for this site, calibration errors can be
estimated as:

wavelength    estimated error (negative mean MFRSR is too low)
415               0.9%
500               1.1%
615               0.2%
673              -1.2%
870               0.3%

The issue here is whether the Langley regressions can be trusted.  Some of
the Langley events give total optical depths less than the Rayleigh limit

From about 1999/06/15 (or much earlier - i can't tell for sure), the Manus Island
MFRSR had shading problem in the morning hours.  These shading problems
can be identified by the fuzziness in the direct normal irradiance.  The
problems were apparently corrected on 1999/08/17.  Time will tell if the
shading problem has been solved.  Only the direct normal irradiance and the
diffuse irradiance are affected.  The total irradiance is OK.
