Description: | On 14 July 1997 lightning struck the EBBR at E8. A number of sensors and components needed to be replaced. One component that was not replaced, a J-panel, suffered some damage that was not obvious at the time. Also, changes in sensors eventually required a change in the CR10 program to accomodate new calibration factors. A new program was installed on 14 October. Unfortunately, an incorrect nighttime calibration for the net radiation was contained in the new program provided by the EBBR vendor REBS. The calibration problem will be covered in a separate DQR. The J-panel problem began to surface on 14 October as well, with most net radiation values being smaller than correct values during the day, and large negative at night; the latter was partially from the J-panel problem and partially from the incorrect nighttime calibration. All net radiation values, nighttime and daytime from 14 October 1997 through 12 May 1998 need to be examined carefully (and compared with other nearby sites) to determine if they are correct, and nighttime values need to be corrected. Much of the latent and sensible heat flux data is corrupted by both problems. The correction to nightime values will be covered in two subsequent DQRs, as two net radiometers, with different calibrations, have been used at E8 since 14 October 1997. |
