Description: | The data was missing over this time period because of a problem with the satellite - note discussion below Subject: URGENT! GOES-8 outage to continue From: jhawkins@nesdis.noaa.gov (Jamie Hawkins) Date: Thu, 9 Jan 1997 16:34:14 +0500 NOAA continues to analyze the GOES-8 problem, which now seems to be unrelated to an electrostatic discharge. Data now indicate that the attitude and orbit control computer (AOCE#2) is not receiving telemetry from one of two momentum wheels which keep the spacecraft facing the earth propoerly. A fix has been identified which will require using a back-up momentum wheel configuration known as L2. To begin L2 operations, NOAA will bring GOES-8 out of safe hold at approximately 5:00PM EST (22:00UTC) tomorrow, Friday January 10th. About two hours later, around 7:00 PM EST (00:00 UTC Saturday), imager and sounder GVAR data should begin flowing from the satellite. Operational products from NOAA for the National Weather Service should resume at that time. However, ALL USERS SHOULD NOTE that it may take 48 hours or longer for accurate navigation and registration to return to GOES-8 imagery. We will keep you informed of any chnages in this scheduled fix during the day Friday. Jamison Hawkins NOAA/NESDIS GOES Product Manager 301-457-5125 |
