Description: | DQR No: Platform: EBBR Subject: E8 EBBR Lightning Strike Date Submitted: October 17, 1997 Submitted By: _x_ Instrument Mentor ___ EST Member ___ Science Team Member ___ Other Platform/Measurement: EBBR/Numerous What level data: (raw,a0,a1,b1,c1 etc): a1 (15 and 30 minute) a0 (5 minute) What location was the data collected at: E8, Coldwater, KS Period of time in question Begin Date 08/05/97 Time 2330 GMT End Date 10/15/97 Time 1830 GMT Discussion of Problem: A lightning "strike" to the EF 8 Facility shortly after 0900 GMT on 14 July 1997 caused the failure of several EBBR sensors, the solar panel voltage regulator, and the CR10 datalogger. A previous DQR indicated this. During the period listed above, all but one of the damaged parts were replaced. Replacements occurred on 22 July, 5 August, 19 August, and 16 September. Some sensors began producing correct data immediately after their replacement; however the temperature measurements were incorrect until 15 October, when the reference temperature probe, with which they are corrected, was reconnected. Only the soil heat flow probe #2 remains to be replaced. Average soil, sensible, and latent heat fluxes are therefore now ,still, incorrect, but can be recomputed using only four sets of soil heat flow probes, as below. ave_shf = (g1 +g3 + g4 + g5)/4 e = -(q + ave_shf)/(1 + bowen) h = -(e + ave_shf + q) |
